Politeness: Chapter 9 solution
9.1 In groups, talk about asituation where you asked for help from your teacher, friend, or a senior.Then, write down a few sentences which contain Can, Could, May, Must, Have to,Might, Should, and highlight them
Can – Can you please
give a glass of water?
Could – Could you please open the window?
May – May I come in sir?
Must – We must take permission from our parents before going outside.
Have to – You have to be careful crossing the road.
Might – He might joined the picnic.
Should – We should not go so far without permission from our parents.
Now try to find answers to the
following questions in the group discussion.

What do the highlighted words mean?
Ans. 'Can' is used to express
ability, opportunity, a request, to grant permission, to show possibility or
impossibility.
'Have to,
must' mean
'obligation'.
'May, indicates that
something will possibly happen or be true in the future, but no one can be
certain.
'Could' is the past form of
'can'. The meaning of 'could' and 'can' is same.
'Should' means what would be
the right thing to do or the right state for something to be in.
2. What are they called?
Ans. They are called
modals.
3. How are they different from
other auxiliary verbs?
Ans. Modal verbs are
used when making requests, asking for permission, speaking of ability, and also
when speaking of possibilities as well. On the other hand auxiliary verbs
indicate information such as tense, mood, voice and other grammatical aspects of
the action.
9.2 Read the conversations.
Note: Students will do
this exercise with the help of class teacher.
9.3 Read the note on the uses
of modal verb. Now work in pairs and find out the mistakes in the following
sentences and write the correct sentences. Then share the sentences with the
class.
Wrong sentences:

d) My friend mights help us.
e) My grandma can to stay with us.
Corrects sentences:
a) I can do the exercise.
Or, I can’t do the exercise.
b) You must give up bad habits.

9.4 In groups, make sentences
of your own using the given modal verbs.
Request politely:
Can – Can you please give me your pen?
Could – Could you please open the window?
May – My I site here?
Obligation:
Must – You must take an umbrella when it rains.
Have to – You have to read attentively.
Possibility:
May – They may be too busy running.
Might – He might come tomorrow.

respond to the situations in writing.

bullying your friend. What should you do?
Ans. You should
protest.
Situation-3: In Bangladesh,
road accidents occur frequently. What can be done to avoid road accidents?
Ans. I must obey the
traffic rules.
Situation-4: One of your
friends was absent from class on Sunday. Now, how can you help him?
Ans. You can help him
by giving class notes if he wants

Predict the weather.

9.7 Complete the writing.
Write down 10 sentences using
modal verbs about “your responsibility as a student towards yourself and yourcommunity”.
As a student, I must study regularly. I should not waste my time. I must go to
school regularly and join the class attentively. I should respect my teachers.
A student should not look for his responsibilities only in studies. He must
serve the society. So I also have to stand by the helpless people around me. I
should not hate the poor. Always extend a helping hand to them. Along with the
society, I should love my country. I must come forward for any need of the
country.
