Now try to find answers to the
following questions in the group discussion.
1.
What do the highlighted words mean?
Ans. 'Can' is used to
express ability, opportunity, a request, to grant permission, to show
possibility or impossibility. 'Have to, must' mean 'obligation'. 'May,
indicates that something will possibly happen or be true in the future, but no
one can be certain. 'Could' is the past form of 'can'. The meaning of 'could'
and 'can' is same. 'Should' means what would be the right thing to do or the
right state for something to be in.
2. What are they called?
Ans. They are called
modals.
3. How are they different from
other auxiliary verbs?
Ans. Modal verbs are
used when making requests, asking for permission, speaking of ability, and also
when speaking of possibilities as well. On the other hand auxiliary verbs
indicate information such as tense, mood, voice and other grammatical aspects of
the action.
